The process for MSN Optimization is very similar to the other big two search engines, with some subtle differences. MSN places greater emphasis on several key SEO factors.

  • MSN Search favors greater keyword density over Google, and possibly Yahoo! Search. Many webmasters report good results with density ranging two or three times that typical of pages optimized for Google.

  • MSN Search places greater weight on meta tags. Well structured meta tags certainly enhance your ranking, while Google on the other hand has discounted there importance in recent times.

  • MSN Search rewards strongly themed pages, in which the content closely correlates to the essential tags of the page, like {title}, the various {meta} tags, {h1} {h2} and so on. Matching phrases and keywords throughout the page is possibly the most important thing to do when optimizing pages for MSN Search.

  • Use of keywords in anchor text is also highly recommended.
  • Keywords within URL’s are also very important.

Essentially, MSN Search looks very closely at both content and keywords. As it stands, it seems to just as keyword weighted as Yahoo! Search, but be careful not to overload your pages with keywords, commonly referred to as keyword stuffing. The penalties can be stiff and long lasting.

MSN Search is likely to become a more potent force on the search engine scene, as more people start using the search engine in the Vista series of operating systems to be launched soon. Not only that but the partnership MSN once had with Yahoo is set to disappear in the very near future as MSN kicks off its very own PPC advertising model. It’s best to start preparations now, so your site doesn’t miss the upsurge in traffic that is likely to flow from these new products.
