Website submission is an essential step in the life your website. There are a number of factors to consider. Generally speaking you can break down website submission into three categories
Manual Submission - This is the DIY approach to search engine submission. Manual Submission requires a great deal of time, and unless you know the search engine market quite well, you'll only ever get minimal benefits from the submission. It’s certainly a cheap option for those not wanting to spend a great deal of money however, and it does mean you have control on how your details are submitted.
Free Submission Tools - This is in many ways the worst option. You'll often see free submission tools claim they list your site to thousands of search engines and hundreds of directories in a blink of an eye. It sounds too good to be, and it is. There are only a couple dozen search engines even worth listing with and possibly less than a dozen directories in your chosen market worth listing with as well. Also keep in mind that scripted submission can lead to blacklisting for your site.
Commercial Submission Service - the best choice is of course a commercial submission service. With a commercial service you’re paying for the time it takes for someone, or perhaps a team of people, to manually submit your website on the "appropriate" search engines and directories. Once again you need to be careful of services that offer to submit your site to hundreds of search engines etc. Chances are, there offering a service no better than the free submission tools. Legitimate commercial services will generally:
- indicate the exact search engines they submit too.
- indicate directories they submit too.
- indicate they will not share your information with third parties.
- provide you with a detailed report on the submission.
- provide you with contact details and helpdesk details should you have any questions.
- give an indication of how long the process will take, and the likely timeframe for results to start flowing in.
It’s always wise to do a search for reviews on the companies you’re looking at. What do other people think of there service, was it a positive or negative experience? Is it worth the money? Don’t assume that because the site looks professional and they seem to have a lot of unsolicited positive feedback on there advertising blurb, that they must be a legitimate site. As always, a little background research is well worth the effort.
