Yahoo! Search is very similar to both MSN Search and Google, although there are some important differences to consider when shooting for yahoo optimization.

  • More than both Google and MSN, Yahoo! Search places possibly the greatest emphasis on fresh content. Its important to update your content, preferably with original copy, as often as possible.

  • Yahoo! Search favors keyword density to the point considered "keyword stuffing" in Google, and probably MSN Search as well. Ideal overall density for Google is no more than 2% per page. Some webmasters report very high rankings with a density approaching double figures in Yahoo! Search.

However, since 50% of all searches are conducted at Google, it would be ridiculous to attempt a density at that level. Its likely to get your site banned. Some people try using plurals, synonyms and other alterations to a keyword or a keyword phrase, although its difficult to gauge if thats effective.

  • Unlike Google, Yahoo! Search places some weight on meta tags, so its important to optimize your meta tags for Yahoo! and MSN Search!

  • Like MSN Search, the Yahoo! spider doesnt appear to be as active as Googlebot, and cannot penetrate much further than 3 levels of hierarchy within your website. Having a well designed sitemap is of fundamental importance to all the search engines.

  • Listing both on DMOZ and Yahoo! Directory, seems to be rewarded at Yahoo! Search. Whether the $299 yearly price tag for listing at Yahoo! Directory is worth it, is debatable, but if your betting on Yahoo! Search becoming more and more relevant in the future, then it's a good bet.

Essentially, Yahoo! Search is the most content hungry of the big three, and because of its favoritism for keywords, also the easiest to manipulate. Be careful if you plan to go down this path however, you need to make use of every technique in your arsenal to make sure you avoid a slap on the wrist from both Google and MSN Search. It's a safer bet that incorporating content which is constantly changing, like blogs and forums, will ensure you rise to the top of the rankings long term.
